The reason why we are beginning this series is because we are hearing more and more comments like this:
“My job as your leader is to lead…and that starts with behaving in a way that makes us all proud. That is not what I did, and it cannot be explained away. This is the first time I’ve been willing to admit that I need leadership help and I intend to get it. I must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up,” said Travis Kalanick, who’s built a reputation for breaking the rules and flouting convention as the President CEO of Uber.
Sometimes, leadership is challenging and overwhelming. Oftentimes, leaders express that they are in over their heads and when they try to make changes, they don’t know where to start. Obviously, their leadership strengths have gotten them into their current role, but what about the times when those strengths no longer serve us well? When do we get in our own way? When and how do we ask for help?
We at Align Leadership thought we’d dive into these topics and ask leaders themselves how they navigate through their day to day challenges, the concept of human capability and the ability to shift and change, and how they tackle the big challenges when they arrive…and, guess what, they will arrive! However, by reading our series, hopefully you’ll be able to find insights from leaders as to how to identify challenges before Travis Kalanick did.
